How to extract VAT from an amount

  1. Type the amount including VAT, for example 1200.
  2. Keep 20% or choose 14% or 7%.
  3. Copy the invoice lines — the total and the VAT included — or each line separately.

Questions

How do I extract 20% VAT?

Divide the amount including VAT by 6: 1200 ÷ 6 = 200 is the VAT, and the net amount is 1000. For 14% multiply by 14/114, for 7% by 7/107. The tool does the same and rounds to the cent.

Why not just take 20% of the amount?

20% is charged on the amount without VAT. Taking 20% of the gross gives too much: 240 instead of 200 out of 1200.

How is VAT rounded?

To the cent, half up. The net amount is the difference, so the lines always add up.
