Text language

In a warehouse, at a meeting or on the road with documents, there is usually no computer around, but your phone is always with you. You can turn a photo into text on your phone right in the browser, on iPhone or Android: snap a label or a business card, fix any mistakes, copy the text and forward it to your work chat.

If you already have the photo, there’s no need to reshoot: pick it from your gallery. If you copied an image in a messenger or on a website, paste it with the “Paste from clipboard” button, where your browser allows it. The tool scales down large photos from your phone camera by itself before recognition, so you don’t have to compress them first.

How to shoot a page without blur or glare

  1. Hold the phone parallel to the page. A slight tilt is straightened automatically, but in a shot taken at an angle the far lines come out smaller and are harder to read.
  2. Tap the text on the screen so the camera focuses on it, and keep the phone still: blur is a common cause of mistakes.
  3. Move closer instead of zooming: digital zoom only stretches the picture, and small digits on a label or business card get blurry.
  4. Turn off the flash: on glossy paper, a laminated notice or the plastic wrap on a box it causes glare, and letters get lost. Daylight works better.

Which phone photos are recognized better

Reads well

  • A printed page in a regular font.
  • A label with large, clear print.
  • A business card with dark text on a light background.

Reads poorly

  • A label or receipt on faded thermal paper.
  • Handwritten notes: fast handwriting is barely recognized.
  • Stamps and signatures over the text can produce “garbage”.
  • A shadow from your hand or phone on the text.

From a camera shot to finished text

  1. Tap “Choose photos” and shoot the page with your camera; add the next page with “Add more photos”.
  2. If the photo card is marked “Unclear”, crop out the margins and background with “Crop”, and the text is read again automatically. If that doesn’t help, reshoot from closer up.
  3. Fix mistakes right on the sheet, and check amounts, phone numbers and codes against the original.
  4. Tap “Copy text” and paste it into your notes or an email, or save a file with “Download .txt”.

When all you have is a phone

  • Receiving goods at a warehouse Shoot the label or delivery note on a box and forward the text to a colleague. Before sending, check the SKUs: O and 0, I and 1 sometimes get mixed up.
  • Handouts at a meeting A partner handed out printed pages, but there is no file. Shoot them one by one: the text from all of them is combined in the order you add them, and tables become lines without columns.
  • Business cards after a trade show Shoot a business card and copy the name, phone and email into your contacts. Ukrainian and English are on by default, so a name in Cyrillic and an email in Latin letters are recognized together.
  • A notice on a board Shoot opening hours or a landlord’s notice so that only the sheet you need is in the frame: neighboring notices get recognized too and add extra lines.

Questions

Do I need an app to get text from a photo on my phone?

No, just open gordey.pro/tekst-z-foto in your browser. If you use it often, add the page to your home screen from the browser menu: it will open from its own icon, like an app, and won’t get lost among your tabs.

Can I get text from an iPhone image if it’s in HEIC?

Yes, HEIC photos from iPhone open directly, no need to convert them to JPG. If a photo is sideways or upside down, the tool rotates it by itself; if it doesn’t, tap “Rotate” on the photo card.

Does the tool work offline when I’m on the road?

Yes, as long as you’ve recognized at least one photo with the languages you need before the trip. The language models, a few megabytes, are saved in this browser’s memory, and everything keeps working with no signal on the train.

How do I send the text to Telegram or Viber?

First pick the view: “Join lines” merges the lines of a paragraph into a normal message, while “As in the photo” keeps the lines of a list, such as SKUs. Then tap “Share” and choose Telegram or Viber.

My phone is slow and takes a long time. What should I do?

Give it time: on a phone, recognition takes longer than on a computer and depends on the device; the first time, a few more seconds go to downloading. Turn off languages you don’t need: they slow things down a bit. Lots of photos are easier to process on a computer.
